OneDrive vs SharePoint Document Libraries

Microsoft has not made the cloud nomenclature easy, so please allow us to help!

OneDrive is for personal employee items. SharePoint is for company shared documents.

When to use OneDrive

  • Personal work related documents. Your daily hitlist, photos, scratchpad, etc.
  • Desktop items
  • Document folder items
  • Personal Photos and videos
  • A temporary document that would be shared with one or two people.

When to use SharePoint

  • When working with a team or group of people
  • Storing company information
  • Any items that would typically be kept on a server
  • Engineering documents
  • Company Procedure documents
  • Project documents and information

Which one is which?

Look for the logos!

Your OneDrive (for personal documents) will say “OneDrive – Company Name” and have a cloud icon. Your SharePoint Document libraries will simply say your company name, and have a corporate logo.
